Airbus, Boeing Win Huge Orders at Dubai Airshow
Airbus and Boeing announced more huge orders for airliners Monday at the Dubai Airshow. Dubai Aerospace Enterprises, an aircraft leasing company, signed letters of intent to buy 100 planes from Airbus and another 100 from Boeing. Those two deals are worth more than $27 billion. Soaring oil prices have triggered an economic boom in oil-rich Gulf states, allowing them to greatly expand their airline fleets. Some Persian Gulf nations want larger airlines as they try to turn their area into a hub for aviation, finance, and tourism.

On Sunday, Dubai-based airline Emirates said it bought 70 mid-sized Airbus planes, with an option to buy 50 more. Emirates also announced 11 firm orders for the Airbus A-380 superjumbo. Emirates signed a separate deal with Boeing, Airbus' main rival, to buy 12 long-range jets. Boeing also took an order from Qatar Airways, which bought 30 mid-sized jets and took options to buy 30 more. Qatar Airways said it will buy 27 Boeing planes.

Armani's lifestyle empire expands with luxury apartments in Dubai
Giorgio Armani's luxury lifestyle empire expanded Sunday as he announced the launch of Armani-designed residences in a Dubai skyscraper billed as the world's tallest building. A statement from the designer's Milan headquarters said a sales office had been opened to start selling the 144 apartments planned for the ninth to 16th floors of the Burj Dubai, which is being developed by the state-owned Emaar Properties. The skyscraper, due to be completed by the end of 2008, is also hosting the first Armani Hotel, featuring 160 rooms and suites, restaurants and a spa. Armani said the hotel and private residences - some of which as large as 200 square metres - would "bring to life my vision of hospitality."

The minimally-designed apartments feature sleek panelling and modern furnishings and accessories from Armani's home furnishings line, Armani/Casa. Armani and Emaar have agreed to develop at least seven luxury hotels and three resorts over the next 10 years. The next hotel is slated for Milan, while the first resort is planned for Marrakech, Morocco, the statement said.

Emaar Properties and Bawadi plan $16bn project
Emaar Properties, the largest Arab real estate company, agreed on a $16 billion project with Dubai's ruler, almost doubling the land it can develop in its home market until foreign projects make money. Emaar will invest 3.85bn dirhams ($1.05bn) in the venture, which replaces a land-for-stock deal it scrapped in August after investors drove its shares to a 28-month low because they were kept in the dark about the details.

Emaar's partner, Bawadi, will contribute 6.5 million sq/m of land, the two firms said. Bawadi's parent, Dubai Holding, is owned by the emirate's ruler, Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The property lies in Dubailand, a stretch of desert almost five times the size of Manhattan, where Bawadi is building what its says will be the world's longest leisure strip with hotels modelled on Egyptian palaces, Hollywood and London's Houses of Parliament.

The Emaar project, which will include commercial, retail and residential components, will start making money in 2009, it said. Emaar had 16.78m sq/m of land in the UAE at the end last year, according to its annual report. Around half that lies in Dubai, where property sales account for about 85pc of Emaar's revenue. A plot of land Emaar owns near Bawadi's site is not covered by the deal, a company spokeswoman said.

"This will be a huge addition to Emaar's Dubai land bank, which has been shrinking fast," said Jitesh Gopi, head of research at SICO investment bank in Bahrain. "Any addition to its land bank at home would be viewed as positive by investors," he said. Emaar, which is building the world's tallest skyscraper, had planned to acquire more land in Dubai by giving Dubai Holding about $8bn worth of stock to keep its expansion on track until foreign projects start making money.

It was forced to abandon the deal when its shares hit a 28-month low of 9.75 dirhams because it did not give investors details of the size, location or value of the land. "The fact that Emaar has given these details is one step toward regaining the confidence of shareholders," said Mohammed Yasin, managing director at Dubai-based Emirates Securities. "Emaar's success will need to come from Dubai-based projects. Other international projects will take a longer time," he said. Source: GULF DAILY NEWS

The award-winning Dubai-based Emirates airline has started the only non-stop service between South America and the Middle East using Boeing's 777-200LR. One of the world's fastest-growing international airlines’ inaugural flight EK 261 landed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Tuesday.

Brazil is now the 60th country on the airline's rapidly-expanding network, with São Paulo becoming the 94th destination. The São Paulo route represents Emirates' fourth flight from Dubai to the Americas, following the launch of daily direct service from New York's JFK airport to Dubai in 2004. Emirates quickly added a second daily nonstop flight in 2005 and a third connecting service through Hamburg in 2006.

On October 29, the airline will begin thrice weekly non-stop service from Toronto to Dubai. Emirates will also be launching thrice weekly non-stop service between Houston and Dubai on December 3 this year that will increase to daily service on February 4, 2008.

Emirates is using its technically advanced Boeing 777-200LR on the route, affording passengers unrivalled in-flight service with eight luxurious private suites in First Class, 42 of its latest lie-flat seats in Business, and generous space for 216 passengers in Economy. The aircraft is fitted with the ice Digital Widescreen – Emirates' next generation in-flight entertainment system, offering over 1,000 channels of movies, TV and game entertainment on demand – more than any other airline.

“This marks an important milestone for Emirates. Not only is it our first gateway in South America, but it means we now fly non-stop to six continents from Dubai,“ said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group.

Passengers from over 12 countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, India, Malaysia and Australia, joined the inaugural flight to São Paulo after connecting through Dubai from other Emirates flights. Source: DTCM

Dubai Salik is opening its doors
We have promised to give you the latest news, details and information regarding Salik system. Indeed, the sale of the Salik sticker has started this week, and the system will be implemented on the 1st of July. You can buy these stickers in more then 300 outlets like Emirates / EPPCO / ENOC petrol stations, branches of Dubai Islamic bank and Emirates Bank, and also directly online on the website: www.salik.ae

The sticker’s beginning price will be DHS 100. The road and transport authority (RTA) will directly deduct DHS 50 to cover their cost, and you will be left with the remaining DHS 50 to pay the toll whenever needed. If you don’t have a Salik sticker by the 1st of July, and you pass under the toll gates, you will be paying a fine of DHS 100 on the 1st day, DHS 200 on the second day, and DHS 400 from the 3rd day onwards. Also, if you don’t have enough credit on your sticker you have to pay a fine of DHS 50 every time you pass by a control gate.

You must be questioning yourself how to know how much credit is left on your card. Salik will automatically send you a text message when your credit reaches DHS 30, DHS 20 and when it becomes zero. When you take a cab, the driver has the obligation of asking you if you would like to use a Salik road or an alternative road. If you chose Salik you have to pay the toll fee that will be added to your taxi fare. If you are renting a car, the car rental company is responsible for proving the Salik sticker; you only pay the toll fares.

Dubai - United Arab Emirates
Dubai Skyscrapers
Dubai is the most populous and second largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates after Abu Dhabi. Dubai is distinct from other members of the UAE in that revenues from oil account for only 6% of its gross domestic product. A majority of the emirate's revenues are from the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ) and increasingly from tourism.

With enormous construction and development in various industries, Dubai has attracted world attention through innovative real estate projects, sports events, conferences and Guinness records. However, this increased attention, coinciding with its emergence as a world business hub have also highlighted potential human rights quagmires concerning its largely immigrant workforce.

The Palm Dubai
The Palm Islands in Dubai are the three largest artificial islands in the world, being constructed by Nakheel Properties in the United Arab Emirates. Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent, and will have residential communities and resorts built upon them. It is possible to make these islands due to the wide continental shelf off the Dubai coast, and the relatively shallow depth of the Persian Gulf.

The islands were designed as part of the plan to develop tourism in Dubai against the eventual depletion of the emirate's oil reserves, which are expected to be depleted in the second decade of the 21st century. The goal is to become one of the biggest areas in the world for tourism as a means of diversifying the economy.

The World Dubai
The World is an archipelago of artificial islands, shaped like the continents of the Earth, being constructed off the coast of Dubai. The project is inspired by the artificial Palm Islands also being built in Dubai. The World will consist of 250 to 300 smaller private artificial islands divided into four categories — private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. The entire project is slated for completion in 2008.

Each island will range from 23,226 m² to 83,613 m² (250,000–900,000 square feet or 5.74–20.66 acres) in size, with 50–100 m of water between each island. The development will cover an area of 9 km in length and 6 km in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by boat and helicopter.
